Dysrhythmia

	I was commissioned by sociology professor Leo Singer, from the University of Liverpool, to create illustrations for his research project titled Dysrhythmia. Detailed information can be found below.

	Dys/Rhythmic Clock

	This image was inspired by Carl Linnaeus’ illustrations of a Flower Clock. Linnaeus was a Swedish naturalist who noticed that plants undergo daily rhythms of wakefulness and sleep. In his 1751 Philosophia Botanica he recorded forty-six species of plants that opened and closed their flowers at fixed times throughout the day. The Flower Clock (Horologium Florae) as conceived by Linnaeus for his town’s park would allow visitors to tell the time, but he never managed to complete his vision. Linnaeus was by no means the first person who observed behavioural patterns roughly following a 24-hour cycle (hence the later term circadian rhythms). The oldest written record comes from the fourth Century BC when the Greek Androsthenes described the circadian rhythm of a tamarind tree. But Linnaeus’ clock stands out for me as special because it marks the beginning of an era when, for the first time in history, rhythms of nature were elevated as a specific object of scientific studies by emerging chemistry, biology, physiology, embryology or anthropology. In her fascinating book on the subject, Janina Wellmann has delimited this period between the years 1760 and 1830.

Just as the naturalists were discovering the processes of transformation of living forms in time, from embryo to death, the exploding capitalist relations and their everyday reproduction were increasingly dependent on precise measurements of time. To perpetuate the rhythm of capital investment, production, sales and consumption, the owners of the manufactures needed to be able to synchronize in time and space a reliable supply of material resources, workers, means of distribution and the markets. National and regional demand turned out to be too limited for the increasingly mechanized industries. This was a ‘matter of time’ in a double sense: as a global race for new colonies to expand the booming markets; but also as a race to invent tools for the measurement of time, in order to calculate a ship’s longitude on the seas. The best mathematicians, astronomers and watchmakers were drafted in the battle.

My Dys/Rhythmic Clock represents the idea that since the birth of industrial capitalism in the times of Linnaeus up to the present days, an invariant feature of modernity has been the coexistence of two major Master Clocks or ‘Zeitgebers’ on the planet – the Sun/Moon cycle on the one hand and the rhythms of the movement of capital on the other. While the best measurement and surveillance technologies of the formative era of Capitalism were based on a mechanical clocks’ spring mechanism, today’s proletariat is being coordinated, measured, valued and ranked by digital algorithmic machines. The binary code that is unwinding spiral-like in the centre of the Dys/rhythmic Clock is not a random sequence of 1s and 0s. I have translated in it a quote from Marx who explains the mutual intertwinement of three rhythms of capital: the circuits of money capital, productive capital and commodity capital: “As a whole then, the capital is simultaneously present, and spatially coexistent, in its various phases. But each part is constantly passing from one phase or functional form into another, and thus functions in all of them in turn. The forms are therefore fluid forms and their simultaneity is mediated by their succession. Each form both follows and precedes the others, so that the return of one part of the capital to one form is determined by the return of another part to another form.” (Marx, Capital volume 2, 1978, p. 184) I understand this passage in Marx’s magnum opus as an illustration of polyrhythmia, where, as shown by Lefebvre and Régulier, each rhythm is being constituted in relation to the others.

The automata never sleep but workers do. The dysrhythmic moment integral to this polyrhythmia (better known as ‘just-in-time-production’ or the ‘gig economy’) arises out of the character of so-called variable capital: the labour power. While the algorithmic chain of commands carries the capital’s tendency to push the gig workers from the day over into the night and back again, the biological limits and responses of human bodies are well-known. Long before 1s and 0s appeared, we have been programmed by evolution to follow the circadian clock of alternating wake and sleep. This genetic clock is in-built in almost every cell of our body. The clash between the two programmes embodied by the shift workers – a food courier and an Amazon worker in the illustration – results in a range of chronic issues, such as cancers, metabolic, cardio-vascular, psychological and inflammatory diseases. The image of the Dys/Rhythmic Clock depicts both types of algorithm – the binary and the evolutionary with the DNA sequence weaved in and out of the floral mass.

	Bido Lito!

For this illustration, I created a piece for The Final Say section of&nbsp;Bido Lito! magazine (Issue 106/December 2019).

In the article, writer and artist in residence at Chester Literature Festival, Imtiaz Dharker, praises the connective power of words. It’s also accompanied by Dharker’s poem, titled&nbsp;The Right Word, from which the illustration is inspired by.

In the poem (seen below), Dharker contemplates on the meanings that can be derived from different words, beginning with the word ‘terrorist’. The most prominent image in the poem for me, and also what I felt embodied the crux of its message, was the image of a child “just outside the door, lost in the shadows.” Hence, the reason why I incorporated the image into the illustration alongside the portrait of Imtiaz Dharker. &nbsp;

	The Right Word
Outside the door,lurking in the shadows,is a terrorist.

Is that the wrong description?Outside that door,taking shelter in the shadows,is a freedom fighter.

I haven’t got this right.Outside, waiting in the shadows,is a hostile militant.

Are words no morethan waving, wavering flags?Outside your door,watchful in the shadows,is a guerrilla warrior

God help me.Outside, defying every shadow,stands a martyr.I saw his face.
No words can help me now.Just outside the door,lost in shadows,is a child who looks like mine.
One word for you.Outside my door,his hand too steady,his eyes too hardis a boy who looks like your son, too.
I open the door.Come in, I say.Come in and eat with us.
The child steps inand carefully, at my door,takes off his shoes.

	Imagining The FutureI was commissioned by Bido Lito! to create an illustration for an article,&nbsp;titled Imagining The Future, in their Lockdown Zine. In the piece, writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce discusses the importance of imagination and creativity for when the world begins to rebuild post-Covid-19.

	Editorial Project
For this project my aim was to recreate a Little White Lies magazine cover for the Luca Guadagnino film, Call Me By Your Name (2017).

Little White Lies, also known as the world’s most beautiful film magazine, is an illustrated film magazine published five times a year. The reason I chose this publication was due to the fact it specialises in my two primary interests: film and portaiture.

	Cover
For this image above, my intention was to recreate one of the most iconic scenes in the film, in which Elio is lustfully watching Oliver dance to The Psychedelic Furs’ Love My Way at a garden party.
The pattern design in the background is based on Italian tiles, representing the southern Italian setting of the film, while I hope the neon hues of the colour pallette evokes the 1980s, the decade in which the film takes place.

	Insert
For the insert of the magazine, I created the illustration below. In the image, in which Elio and Oliver are placed atop a drawing of two peaces, my intention was to convey the characters’ connectivity, but also to acknowledge the significance of peaches within the film.

In the film, peaches have an importance due to their inclusion in the most infamous scene in the film, where Elio masturbates with the fruit over his love for Oliver.&nbsp;

	Film Poster Project
For this project, my aim was to produce a series of three illustrated film posters, and resolved that these would be Melancholia (2011), Mother! (2017) and Midsommar (2019).

I chose these films not just because of the coincidental fact that they all begin with the letter ‘M’, but also in how they relate to each other in much more interesting aspects. Firstly, the directors of each film are similarly notable for their uncompromisingly dark arthouse features, renowned for burying themselves into the psyche of the viewer. These directors are Lars Von Trier, Darren Aronofsky and Ari Aster.

	A second aspect, and one that is rarely seen in cinema, is the fact that each of the three films features a young female protagonist experiencing extreme levels of psychological distress. In Melancholia, Kirsten Dunst’s character Justine is consumed by a debilitating depression, to the extent of essentially being catatonic, unable to take baths without assistance and feeling so numb her meals taste like ashes. In Mother!, Jennifer Lawrence’s titular character endures major mental trauma when her home is invaded by intruders, which inexplicably develops into a nightmarish scenario where she is eventually beaten and her newborn baby is killed and eaten. Lastly, in Midsommar, Florence Pugh’s Dani is terrorised by a pagan cult, all the while suffering from frequent panic attacks triggered by the trauma of the death of her family.

	<img width="1198" height="1196" width_o="1198" height_o="1196" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/14518310196a37a5db707ff7918182ee8d6304701db652c7b83886ddefd44952/Screenshot-2020-07-08-at-18.03.24.png" data-mid="76844516" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/14518310196a37a5db707ff7918182ee8d6304701db652c7b83886ddefd44952/Screenshot-2020-07-08-at-18.03.24.png" />

	<img width="1198" height="1196" width_o="1198" height_o="1196" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c4a27ab24f9e25646d05955bd1b5dcf49597590aff73259730e5c16f4315f647/Screenshot-2020-07-08-at-18.03.06.png" data-mid="76844518" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c4a27ab24f9e25646d05955bd1b5dcf49597590aff73259730e5c16f4315f647/Screenshot-2020-07-08-at-18.03.06.png" />

	The three films also link thematically and conceptually, with Mother! essentially acting as a bridge between the other two films. This is because of Mother!’s capacity to be interpreted in various different ways, either in a religious or environment sense.

In a religious context, the titular character of Mother is essentially a Mother Mary figure, who procreates with Javier Bardem’s God-like character to produce a Christ figure in their newborn baby. When the baby is killed and eaten by the intruders at their house, it’s a metaphor for a Christian mass and the notion of Jesus offering up his flesh and blood. It’s a theory that’s strengthened by the obvious retelling of the Old and New Testament at the beginning of the film.

These ritualistic and sacrificial aspects puts Mother! in direct parallel with Midsommar, and the ceremonial acts of the pagan cult Dani visits with her boyfriend and his friends. Towards the end of the film, after witnessing numerous slaughters and disappearances, Dani discovers that nine human sacrifices must be offered to purge the commune of its evil. This act of barbarity for the sake of religious beliefs, I feel, correlates quite strongly with the disturbing baby scene in Mother! Additionally, to add further to the comparison, both films end with a particular focus on fire: a burning temple at the end of Midsommar, and a burning house at the closing moments of Mother!

	In another viable interpretation, Mother! is an environmental story told from the perspective of Mother Earth, with the house acting as Earth itself. Evidently, the onslaught of invaders causing chaos and destruction is an allegory for mankind’s treatment of the planet, and it’s in this metaphorical treatment of a planet that Mother! can now relate to Melancholia.

In Melancholia, the metaphorical planet is not Earth but the titular planet of Melancholia, which is actually heading on a deadly path towards Earth. Melancholia is less environmental like Mother! and more astronomical in its handling of a planet. However, similar to the allegories in Mother!, it’s essentially a symbolic backdrop to Justine’s depression, and her stoic reaction to the obliteration of Earth in comparison to her non-depressive, and subsequently hysterical, sister.

	Above are the final illustrations I submitted for my university project. As evident, the three posters connect stylistically in their colour pallettes and compositional elements, which is what I set out to achieve.
	However, I was ultimately disatisfied with the final result, and since then I have developed the illustrations to have a monochrome pallette. The results can be seen below.

	Linked Phrases ProjectFor this second year university project, I was tasked with creating illustrations for a series of six linked phrases. These phrases were ‘People Watch’, ‘Watch Tower’, ‘Tower Over’, ‘Overthrow’, ‘Throw Party’ and ‘Party Member.’ Due to the nature of these phrases, I concluded that the narrative behind them would be the idea of a corrupt government being conquered by its people, resulting in the formation of a new goverment.

For the first time, and in an approach that’s unique to this project, I created all of the illustrations digitally, using the Procreate app on an Apple iPad Pro. They are seen below:

	Print Book
Following this, I screenprinted my illustrations and created a pamphlet-style book out of them that was sewn together with a red cross-stitch. Due to the narrative of the illustrations, I took some inspiration from &nbsp;Cold War propaganda leaflets. It can be seen in the slideshow below:

	Five Exhibition
From 14 May - 1 September 2018, I was involved in the ‘Five’ exhibition at Kirkby Gallery: an exhibition showcasing five of the best painters currently living or working in Knowsley. Apart from myself, the artists were Gary McGillivray, Leslie Briggs, Gill Cowley and Mike Kirkby.

Complimenting this and taking central stage within the gallery was ‘The Artist’s Studio’, where exhibiting artists took residency within the studio on certain days of the week, enabling the public to observe and engage with them about their work.
